Electric Cars: Government is overrated

Here’s the entire text of a recent Instapundit post.

EXPERTS EVALUATE THE McCain and Obama electric-car plans.

This feels completely ‘bass-ackwards’ to me.

Politicians don’t build or sell cars. Government doesn’t design cars. I’d rather compare the Volt with the Tesla; Contrast what General Motors, Ford, Toyota, or Volkswagon are planning to do with electric cars.

Subsidies, incentives, tax increases, tax breaks, or other regualtory sticks and carrots are all just ways of politicians trying to be seen as ‘doing something’. Its meant to enable governemnt to take the bows for the technological achievements of others (as in Al Gore: Inventor of the Internet) It perpetuates the myth that nothing significant can ever occur without the aid of government (aka ‘The Cult of the Omnipotent State’).

So who has the better policy? I don’t know. That the question is even asked feels like a defeat.

At times it feels like all the world is looking for a better way to skin a cat. While I’m wondering why one would want to skin a cat to begin with.
