Wow, I’m not the only one with a “Maus” CD-ROM.

It seems a bit absurd today, a multi-media CD-ROM presentation of the Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novels. But, like James Lileks must have also done, I thought it was pretty darn good thing.

Media without a set, static standard, just isn’t going to work in the marketplace. Neither media companies, nor consumers are interested in the hassle of releasing Version 1.1, 1.2, etc. of an item, so that it runs properly.

That’s why so many of the goofy CD anti-piracy measures aren’t received well. They violate standards for audio CDs, and don’t play at all in some players. And ultimately, people will find a way to defeat these systems.
